Porcelain and stoneware works by Portuguese artist Paulo Alves arrived at the beginning of July 2014. His reputation for clean lines, combinations of colour and fabulous finishes drew us to his work and we are delighted to be his first outlet in the UK.

Born in 1963, Portuguese ceramicist Paulo Alves now lives and works in Spain.  To our great excitement he recently contacted us to see if we might be interested in showing his work  ...how could we refuse!

His delicate style and earthy tones are masterfully executed, and are already proving to be a popular addition to our ceramics collection.

Paulo started his career in 1987, attending courses in Spain and Portugal from 1987 to 2005, in various areas of ceramics.  He studied alongside professional ceramicists including Macho Porto, Juan Carlos Santos, José Antonio Sarmiento, Manuel Keller, Emidio Galassi and Arcadi Blasco.
Since 2002 Paulo has shown in numerous exhibitions, and has been guest artist at events across Spain and Portugal.  For those who may find it of interest here is a brief list of these events: The 21st Sargadelos Seminary, Galicia, and in the 5th International Symposium of Artistic Ceramics “Earth, Music and Poetry”, Puerto Príncipe, Cuba.  Guest of the Resident Artist program of the Ignéry Foundation-Art & Archaeology, in Republica Dominicana, where he contributed work for two expositions.

And if you happen to be taking a visit to Portugal you can find his work in the São Lourenço Cultural Center (Almancil, Algarve) and the Prova de Artista Galley (Lisbon).  For those of you heading to Spain you check out his work in La casa del Arco – Espacio de Arte y Diseño de Vejer de la Frontera (Cádiz)

...Alternatively, you can just head over to our picture postcard village of Nunnington, and see a fantastic collection of his work here at Bils & Rye.
