Change of Opening Times

Change of Opening Times

January is a great time to take stock of what works and what doesn’t and we have been very busy sorting out plans for 2019 during these past couple of weeks. Part of that has been looking at our opening times. Sundays just haven’t worked out as we had hoped so with immediate effect we will no longer open on Sundays unless by prior appointment. We still encourage visitors to ring the number on the door of the gallery should we be closed and if available we can be there in five minutes to open up.

Christmas Opening Hours

Christmas Opening Hours

How quickly has 2018 passed? Feels like yesterday we opened the doors in January 2018 and here we are with Christmas nearly upon us once again! This year has seen us launch Elements at Bils & Rye, featuring a more affordable range of ceramics and prints from artists and makers from all over the UK. Each piece has function along with stunning design and high quality making.

Further we have introduced around 60 more artists to the Yorkshire art scene and 2019 is shaping up to be another great year for the gallery with high quality works lined up from up and down the UK.

A rapid trip down to London yesterday and back in the gallery with new works today! Thanks to Layla for doing the whole weekend in London, checking out The Other Art Fair and then two full days at Ceramic Art London, lining up lots of wonderful works for the gallery this year!

We have come back with work by three overseas artists. Grainne Watts, from the Republic of Ireland, and her amazing twinned walled works in stoneware and porcelain. She then decorates with underglazes and slips with mind boggling designs! They are beautifully finished and truly original!

New arrivals from Rose Eva, Laura Boswell, Anne-Sophie Gilloen and Thomas Joynes plus a fabulous discount offer from Simon Gudgeon.

We are working on another new project in the gallery that will see us develop a new website with real time links to our stock. For this we will be asking for a little more data from you so that we send the right kind of information in the future.

We will send out a mailchimp newsletter as soon as the system is finalised, hopefully towards the end of this week. We expect for the system to be live in 3 to 4 weeks with the website following shortly afterwards.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

2017 has past with a rush! It's been a big year for the team, bedding into our new location in Kirkbymoorside and then enduring the eighteen weeks of renovations that ensued! We now have the gallery we really wanted and all that hard work has been worth the efforts.

We would firstly like to thank the teams who helped with the renovations from Sid Brackley's building firm, Jonathan Graham's decorations, Chris Clark Electricians, Ryedale District Council for their understanding and assistance and no least our landlord who had the larger bill at the end of the works.

Through it all we continued to trade, despite the gallery closing it's doors for two months

More Ideas! Sorry, we do deal in Temptation!

More Ideas! Sorry, we do deal in Temptation!

Another whistle stop tour of the UK and we are back with more wonderful artworks to tempt you. 12 counties in 3 days and another 900 miles wracked up to make sure we have the very best to offer visitors to the gallery. We have also have Google in to create some internal 360 degree shots for Google Maps, so that you can check we really are doing what we say from the comfort of your home/office! It's up live and click the image below to check it out!

What's New? Nearly Everything!

Three quick films for those who haven't yet managed to get to the gallery since we reopened on the 2nd September. There will be some professionally shot images and films coming soon. It's an eclectic mix as ever but we think the strongest show of work by such a talented group of artists that we have ever shown. If you can't visit please do get in contact me more films of specific areas of the gallery!

Grand Reopening! 2nd September 2017 - From The Ashes!

Grand Reopening! 2nd September 2017 - From The Ashes!

September sees us celebrate our first year in the new premises in Kirkbymoorside. The last few months have been a trying time, with renovations running way beyond the desired finish date due to weather and complexities of an old building. So we are ready for a party!

The work may not have finished but we hope the scaffolding will be down and just the decorating on the outside will need to be finished. We can't wait any longer to open up the gallery and show the changes inside as well as outside!

Chris Taylor & Albert Montserrat and more...

Chris Taylor & Albert Montserrat and more...

November sees us welcome another new potter, Chris Taylor, who plies his trade from studios in Devon. Using quite different techniques to the norm, printing, sandblasting and decals to create pots of magnitude. We love that each pot is as individual as the eventual owners and that they have an appearance of being decayed with layer upon layer of history embedded into each piece.

We have a batch of 9 pots that arrived at the end of October, one sold instantly so there are 8 to pick from ranging from £190 to £1050.

SETTLED IN!

SETTLED IN!

It has been a head spinning few weeks since we made the decision to move the gallery. Five weeks from the point of signing the lease on 5 Market Place, Kirkbymoorside to opening the doors to a large new exhibition with 29 new makers! Meanwhile our plans for the stand at Cambridge Art Fair continued apace and we returned with quite a bit less work than we took. Now that that is over we can concentrate on the new gallery space which is proving to be a big hit with visitors and generally getting the seal of approval from the locals.

It's Moving Time!

It's Moving Time!

There have been some close calls over the last three years as we have searched extensively for a new home for the gallery. Nothing really nailed the look we were after, a grown-up version of the space we occupy at Nunnington Studios. Strangely a building we pass daily almost that has been empty since it closed as a public house back in 2010 caught our eye. In less than a month we have negotiated (hard) and signed a lease.

Emerging Potters Exhibition

Emerging Potters Exhibition

After many hours of study and consideration we have made our selections for the forthcoming Exhibition for Emerging Potters. We have a selection of 30 artists all new to Bils & Rye. We are delighted in the quality of the work submitted and it was no easy task cutting it down to a manageable level for our first event of this type.

There is still heaps of work to do to get the show ready, but in the meantime, here are a few images of the successful entrants.

The Cafe at Nunnington Studios

The Cafe at Nunnington Studios

We are really delighted to welcome Fryton Catering to Nunnington Studios, bringing with them years of experience catering for functions across North Yorkshire. The cafe and Sweet Valentine (an affordable gift shop) opened their doors this morning.

No great fanfare as yet, that comes next week when there is an official launch event with canapes, hog roast and bar!

I've tried the bacon sandwich and gave it top marks! I'll be back for more later today I am sure!

Albert Montserrat - Porcelain Mastered

Albert Montserrat - Porcelain Mastered

Our tip for the year in ceramics is Catalan artist Albert Montserrat. His thrown porcelain vessels are majestic measuring 50-60cm tall. Currently priced at £350.00 they represent great value too! We currently have six examples in the gallery collected at the weekend. There were 8 but already two have departed to new homes!

Albert's use of oil spot glazes helps to elevate an already beautiful pot to something quite magnificent.

We are also delighted to announce that Fryton Catering have taken on the old coffee shop at Nunnington Studios and will be opening the doors shortly. It will be great to have a buzz about at the yard again. They have planned a launch event for Friday 29th April in the evening and we will be letting you know more about that shortly. The gallery will be open for the evening too so you can experience the courtyard and all that it offers along with a glass or two of wine with canapés and a hog roast!

In The Gallery Now

In The Gallery Now

As ever there is a diverse collection of ceramics in the four rooms that make up Bils & Rye. Strong colours combined with antique, retro and reclaimed furniture provide an alternative setting for works of real distinction.

Each room has sculpture added from some of the most exciting British sculptors. We have a strong heritage of sculpture at the gallery, one of the rooms was built by the sculptor, John Bunting, who worked with Robert Thompson (the Mouseman) and Henry Moore before teaching Sir Anthony Gormley at the nearby Ampleforth Abbey.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance

Yorkshire Air Ambulance

This year it's fund raising for Yorkshire Air Ambulance that's on our Christmas list!

It's been a tremendous year at the gallery growing by 200% and firmly becoming established as a specialist dealer in British Contemporary Ceramics. So as we approach the end of year three we wanted to do a little fun charity fund raiser.

Earlier this year, shortly after the Nunnington Bash fundraiser for Yorkshire Air Ambulance, we were reminded just how important this service is when it came to the rescue of one of our dear friends. Thanks to their important work, our friend is still with us, fighting fit and laughing as much as ever.

For The Love of Art

For The Love of Art

If you're not used to going into galleries or buying art it can be a bit of a scary prospect, intimidating even and part of our ethos at Bils & Rye came about in response to this, ‘Taking the Intimidating Aspect Out of Art’.

Art really is in the eye of the beholder, and as such, no one option of it is right or wrong.  It comes down to personal taste and that is exactly how it should be approached when you consider purchasing anything.

2016 - External Sculpture Garden

2016 - External Sculpture Garden

We are currently putting together plans for a six month selling show of garden sculpture within a world renowned garden. We are looking for a broad selection of figurative and abstract sculptures in stone, resin, metal and new materials to fill a number of spaces. Part of the show will be a feature weekend where up to 70 sculptures will be placed around the park.

Invitations for artists to apply to have their work featured in both the long and short shows are now open. There are a number of images in this blog showing potential locations through the gardens. Artists are requested to apply via email with three examples of their recent works along with a two paragraph explanation of their heritage and training.
