A Slice of Yorkshire and the Bank Holiday Weekend

A Slice of Yorkshire and the Bank Holiday Weekend

Last weekend saw the opening of the much anticipated A Slice of Yorkshire exhibition. A well attended event on the Saturday marked the start of the show, with much nervousness abounding as work was delivered right up to an hour before opening!

The show will evolve as works are released to buyers on the day and we have a few surprises lined up for the coming three months. Key highlights are securing a small offering from award winning James Oughtibridge (pictured above) and new works by Brendan Hesmondhalgh who elected to withdraw from Chelsea Flower Show which resulted in his new body of work where he incorporates metal into his ceramic sculptures joining the Yorkshire exhibition.

Top Tips For 2017 - Ceramics

Top Tips For 2017 - Ceramics

We have hand picked a few of the resident ceramicists and a few that we have lined up for later in 2017 as our top picks for the year. Each has a very different approach, either in making or in the finishing process. The results show the depth of talent in the UK and beyond and the broad range of ceramics now available across the UK.

We will continue to showcase these talented makers and many more whilst helping the emerging artists such as Rhian Malin to find a place in this buoyant and exciting market. We currently have over 40 potters on show from long time specialists such as Stephen Murfitt, Akiko Hirai and Tanya Gomez to the wonderful emerging talents of Albert Montserrat, Alex Shimwell and Cat Santos.

We have a number of selection criteria for the artists we show, not least form, function and finish. It's a delight to open up a box of the latest arrivals!

Ceramic Nirvana

Ceramic Nirvana

For the last four years we have worked hard to bring new, exciting and technically advanced ceramics to the gallery from all over the UK and further afield. We currently hold an extensive stock of works that reflect the immense strength and depth in the ceramics field, all of which are hand-made by artisans that pride themselves on developing their skills.

Chris Taylor & Albert Montserrat and more...

Chris Taylor & Albert Montserrat and more...

November sees us welcome another new potter, Chris Taylor, who plies his trade from studios in Devon. Using quite different techniques to the norm, printing, sandblasting and decals to create pots of magnitude. We love that each pot is as individual as the eventual owners and that they have an appearance of being decayed with layer upon layer of history embedded into each piece.

We have a batch of 9 pots that arrived at the end of October, one sold instantly so there are 8 to pick from ranging from £190 to £1050.

SETTLED IN!

SETTLED IN!

It has been a head spinning few weeks since we made the decision to move the gallery. Five weeks from the point of signing the lease on 5 Market Place, Kirkbymoorside to opening the doors to a large new exhibition with 29 new makers! Meanwhile our plans for the stand at Cambridge Art Fair continued apace and we returned with quite a bit less work than we took. Now that that is over we can concentrate on the new gallery space which is proving to be a big hit with visitors and generally getting the seal of approval from the locals.

Cambridge Art Fair - 2016

Thursday 29th September sees the fourth running of the Cambridge Art Fair in the Guildhall located on the Market Place. We have taken a large stand to show 14 of our highly talented artists.

It is an all ticket affair, you can download a free ticket from our website though and with over 40 galleries showing works by artists from all over the world it promises to be a great event and well worth visiting.

9 Collectible Artists for the Year Ahead

9 Collectible Artists for the Year Ahead

It's been a while since we sat down and worked out who is good to collect and maybe bring some much needed positivity to your life and net worth! We scan the shelves and add a few that are soon to join the gallery. We would love your feedback too!

Albert Montserrat - Porcelain Mastered

Albert Montserrat - Porcelain Mastered

Our tip for the year in ceramics is Catalan artist Albert Montserrat. His thrown porcelain vessels are majestic measuring 50-60cm tall. Currently priced at £350.00 they represent great value too! We currently have six examples in the gallery collected at the weekend. There were 8 but already two have departed to new homes!

Albert's use of oil spot glazes helps to elevate an already beautiful pot to something quite magnificent.

We are also delighted to announce that Fryton Catering have taken on the old coffee shop at Nunnington Studios and will be opening the doors shortly. It will be great to have a buzz about at the yard again. They have planned a launch event for Friday 29th April in the evening and we will be letting you know more about that shortly. The gallery will be open for the evening too so you can experience the courtyard and all that it offers along with a glass or two of wine with canapés and a hog roast!

2016 - The Fun is Just Beginning!

2016 - The Fun is Just Beginning!

We are back open after a short Christmas break, excited for what 2016 may bring. We thought we would kick off with a few of our tips for success in 2016. This week we concentrate on Ceramics.

In the ceramics world, which has seen much needed national press coverage with the BBC2 series 'The Great Pottery Throw Down', we have seen several makers continue to produce astounding works. Those of you who know us, will be aware that we don't follow the normal trends of pottery, preferring to extol the wonders from the whole industry rather than one form. Yes the pedigree of todays great artists owes a huge amount to Leach, Rie, Hamada and others but for us there is so much more than reworking their pieces.

5 Weeks To Go!

5 Weeks To Go!

The countdown has begun, we are just 5 weeks away from our first grown up exhibition. The Harrogate International Visual Arts Expo will be held in the Harrogate International Centre Hall M from the 20th November to the 22nd November 2015.

Bils & Rye will occupy stands A1 & A2 to the left of the entrance. It's a mixed show with some galleries and some artists showing their wares. We will be bringing a broad selection from the gallery with some special stars coming in for the show.

You can expect to see them in the gallery thereafter. Over the next four weeks we will be introducing each of the artists via our newsletter, which can be signed up for here.
