2015 proved to be the year of sculpture in the gallery, with us finding new homes for more pieces than previous years. The supply has helped no end with top end sculptors asking to exhibit at the gallery and 2016 is the year we will spend more resources on bringing in more contemporary works from around the UK.
Here our a few of our picks for 2016!
We are delighted to be entering our third year exhibiting works by Holmfirth based artist Brendan Hesmondhalgh. The horse left us recently but the fox is still up for grabs. New work will arrive in the spring!
We continue to be Helen Sinclair's stockist for the North of England and have an extensive collection of her works in both Stone Resin and Bronze. Most of our stock in stone resin can be remade in Bronze at about an 8 week order to delivery timescale. There are shades of Giacometi and Moore about her work yet each piece is clearly of Helen's design.
Michael's work continues to be much admired and in demand. Now he is working full-time in his Lincoln studio producing pieces that have a clear lineage to his lead inspiration in Barbara Hepworth. The use of gold and palladium leaf on limestones with their partial polished, partial rough textures marks him out as a must have for any sculptural collector.
We recently collected three new pieces by former jeweller turned sculptor Michelle McKinney. Her works utilise fine metal meshes more usually found in laboratories across the globe. These meshes are normally used to filter chemicals but we think Michelle has found a great new purpose for them. Using gold, silver, bronze and brass mesh and then applying jewellery techniques to create stunning wall sculptures, Michelle is very on the money!
We started working with Philip in November 2015. Even we were amazed at the response with 8 sculptures leaving in as many days! His work is fresh, individual and completely handmade. Philip uses key components to make single edition pieces, often working to a theme but never replicating the same design. He casts all his own work, each piece finished to perfection. His work starts at under £400 and rising to a lot more for large scale pieces. It's been a delight working with him!
Another new arrival in 2015, Tom's work has been applauded by all visitors to the gallery and shows. His novel take and use of modern technologies combined with old school craftsmanship mean his pieces are really in demand. Whether individual thought provoking pieces of stunning family groups his work is strong from all angles. There is light play with his acrylic pieces and at times a weightlessness to his works in Coreten Steel.
We are continuing with plans to open a sculpture garden in Ryedale, albeit against many obstacles! More news will be coming shortly. We also are keen to talk to many new sculptors about working together in the future, so if you think your work fits our look and ethos then please do get in touch!
As ever, there will be a constant evolution of works in the gallery through 2016 and sculpture will form the basis for all our stands at exhibitions across the country.
