Jane Human

Oil Paintings Created Using Traditional Printing Methods

Jane Human is a Norfolk-based painter and printmaker whose work is primarily concerned with interpretation of landscape. Her work is characterised by a strong sense of place and by exploration of colour, texture and space.
Inspiration comes from what is seen, however briefly; from direct and repeated observation of the shifting landscapes around her, taking account of a fleeting moment of extraordinary light, juxtapositions of natural forms, unexpected colour. Jane’s work explores rhythm and space and also formal structural design concerns.
She says “I am frequently drawn to coastal terrain and transient shifting vistas, those vast spaces anchored by the horizon, where one can explore the connections between land, sea and sky. I am most intrigued by quiet lands of wide skies and horizontal flow, with interest to be found in subtlety, passing light, fleeting reflections; landscapes which reveal themselves slowly and rewards patient looking. My working process is a contemplative one and crucially I hope this spirit will infiltrate the final pieces as I aim to construct a space and place which can be lingered within, and which will engage on both an abstract and a figurative level.”
Jane often works in series, and her unique working methods for producing her paintings on paper utilise a magnificent 1940’s offset litho press to build countless fine layers of colour and marks over many weeks - this process naturally allowing for the traces of a previous work to become the start of the next.
Jane Human’s work has been selected for many prestigious national exhibitions, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, The Royal Society of British Artists, National Open Art, Originals National Print exhibition.
Her work is held in public, private and corporate collections in the UK, including the Public Art Foundation and NHS, and also in Europe, Ireland, USA, Australia, and New Zealand.
